The mines of Fresnillo have produced some of the finest known examples for this sought-after silver mineral. The miniature shown above is exceptionally aesthetic, with a grouping of lustrous metallic black crystals measuring 34 x 34 x 31 mm in size studded upon a single prismatic crystal of colorless transparent to translucent quartz. The specimen stands 4.3 cm in height. Crystallized all of the way around. This is very clean of damage; only with a 10x loupe can I find maybe three tiny areas with very minor chipping. This is as free of damage as one can reasonably expect. Neat the way the crystals are studded upon the quartz; unusual and very choice. |

The silver mines around Freiberg in Saxony began serious operation around the 14th century. The district is most notable to mineral collectors for fine silver minerals. The acanthite miniature shown above is one such example. Superb well formed crystals of acanthite to 6 x 6 mm in size are "draped" over a matrix of crystallized colorless quartz. The crystals show "all around" and are undamaged. Some exhibit twinning. This is a very fine Freiberg acanthite miniature measuring %dimensions% in size overall. I had this one once before and have recently reacquired it. Ref: Lapis 11(7/8), 13-60 (1986). |

This is an outstanding well crystallized native silver specimen from the classic mining area in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The specimen consists of a dark hackly crystalline mass of native copper measuring 7.3 x 4.8 x 6 cm in size, this hosting 8 choice bright elongated spinel-law twin crystals of native silver, the largest measuring to 16 mm in length. The presentation and placement of the silver crystals upon the copper matrix is perfect. There is no damage. For silver crystals from Michigan, these are very well formed and definitive. A superb piece! |

Good silver minerals from this famous old locality are never commonly seen on the market today. The example shown here is superb for pyrargyrite. A matrix-less grouping of stout terminated reddish-black somewhat lustrous crystals measures 14 x 14 x 30 mm in size. This is very sharply formed and clean of damage. Shows nicely all around 360 degrees. Ex Dawn and Jim Minette collection #T1501. Previous label from Hansen Minerals notes that this was ex National Museum of Norway; there is also a small handwritten label which accompanies the piece, I assume from the museum(?). Very choice! |

One of Europe's more classic locality, St. Andreasberg is especially noted for its fine silver minerals. The thumbnail shown here is outstanding. Bright lustrous metallic black sharply formed and terminated prismatic crystals of pyrargyrite to 17 mm in length are forming an aesthetic spray measuring 27 x 20 x 22 mm in size overall. The crystals are complete all around 360 degrees and even with my 10x loupe I cannot find any damage or chipping. The quality is excellent for this species! A superb old-time European classic! Probably the world's foremost locality for native silver specimens is in Norway. Most all collectors long to own a good Norwegian native silver specimen. The "toe-nail" specimen shown here is quite neat, featuring a curled 2.5 mm thick native silver wire. The wire is sort of black in color due to acanthite(?) coatings. Measures approximately 20 x 10 x 28 mm in size overall. Ex Dawn and Jim Minette collection #T1369 with data card. This card notes that the specimen was previously in the collection of A.G. Boynton with label. Ref: The Mineralogical Record: 17: 19-36. |

A beautiful and aesthetic grouping of curled native silver wires, the overall size approximately 20 x 25 x 26 mm in size. There are small colorless crystals of calcite upon the silver wires; the thickest wire measures 4 mm across. Complete all around; good native silver specimens from this famous locality are always in very high demand. Ex Dawn and Jim Minette collection #T0992 with data card. They acquired the specimen from the collection of Leonard Bedale; his data card notes that the piece was formerly in the Smithsonian Institution collection (no label though) and was acquired through Dave Wilbur in 1980. |
