These brown barite "oakstone" specimens have been known for many, many years. This is a unique piece, consisting of a solid barite with four different "windows" cut and polished to show the interior. The lower picture shows the piece from the base, showing the typical banding thus giving the term "oakstone". Sits nicely for display. This is quite nice for one of these Derbyshire classics!

Very fine bladed terminated crystals of barite forming a cluster measuring 4.2 x 2.9 x 0.6 cm in size, this set nicely on a matrix of crystallized white dolomite. One side of the barites are coated by reddish-brown hematite; the other side of the barites are uncoated and show the nice bluish-gray color and translucency. One tiny chip is present, if you look very close, on one of the crystal edges. Otherwise perfect and shows well all around 360 degrees. Sits perfectly for display by itself. Nice old-timer!

A lovely single terminated prismatic water clear colorless lustrous calcite crystal without matrix. Microscopic level chipping is present; to my naked eye it is very clean of damage. A fine "old-timer" from Great Britain! Ex Dawn and Jim Minette collection #WW077.

This is an outstanding well crystallized miniature specimen for chalcocite. From a classic old locality, this shows brilliant lustrous hexagonal crystals of chalcocite to 0.7 cm in size mostly coating one side of matrix. Absolutely damage-free, there are a lot of excellent well defined crystals on the specimen. This is neat three dimensional piece, best viewed when held in the hand. A very fine and choice old-time Cornish classic! Ref: Embrey and Symes, Minerals of Cornwall and Devon (1987).

Congolite and trembathite are extremely rare members of the boracite group. Congolite is a dimorph of ericaite; trembathite is a dimorph of boracite. This specimen came to me labeled as ericaite; according to Neil Hubbard these have since been found to be congolite. The reference cited below states that the specimens are trembathite or a mixture of congolite and trembathite. Regardless, the example shown here is outstanding for both species! A black lustrous single loose crystal, complete all around, and very clean of damage. Ex Ralph Clark collection. Before Ralph, the specimen was in the collection of Lindsay Greenbank. Very fine and choice! Ref: UK Journal of Mines and Minerals No.25 pp31&32.

Excellent green curved hexagonal crystals of mimetite averaging 1 - 2 mm in size thickly covering a massive white quartz matrix. Undamaged, these are extremely nice under magnification. According to Cooper and Stanley, in Minerals of the English Lake District - Caldbeck Fells, page 109, mimetite specimens from here are extremely phosphatic and approach the pyromorphite side of the binary solid solution series. Measures 6.8 x 3.7 x 5.3 cm in size overall.

The iron mines of Cumbria have been long known to have produced some of the world's most beautiful calcite specimens. The best of these were produced in the late 1800's, early 1900's. The Bigrigg Mine was one of the most noted producers of fine calcite. The example shown here is outstanding and very pretty. Highly lustrous water clear transparent prismatic crystals of calcite to 3.9 cm in length are coming nicely off a common matrix. I can find two "pinpoint" tiny blemishes on the piece; one has to look very closely to find these. Overall, considering what this is, I think it in outstanding shape damage-wise. Measures 7 x 6.8 x 6.9 cm in size overall. The quality is excellent. Ex Dawn and Jim Minette collection #WW067 with data card. Also comes with a previous label from the Chicago Natural History Museum. The specimen was originally part of the display by Ward's Natural Science Establishment at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago. The museum acquired the entire exhibit from Ward's after the exposition. Another previous label showing that this specimen was part of the special exhibit at the 2002 East Coast Gem and Mineral Show in Springfield, Mass.

An 8 x 6 x 10 cm cluster of pale blue bladed barite crystals to 4 cm in size. The crystals are translucent; there is damage present as seen in the photos. Pretty much crystallized all around 360 degrees. A very good cabinet sized reference quality specimen for this classic locality! Ex Dawn and Jim Minette collection #WW536. The specimen was on display at the 2002 East Coast Gem and Mineral Show special exhibit and carries a label from the show.

Pyromorphite on Quartz - Wheal Alfred, Phillack, St Erth - Gwithian Area, Cornwall, England, UK

The finest examples of pyromorphite found in Cornwall came from Wheal Alfred. First worked during the early 1800's, last operations at the mine were in 1862. Good specimens are not often seen available today. This example shows a 7.7 x 7.1 x 4.8 cm massive iron-stained quartz matrix, this with slightly translucent lustrous green prismatic crystals of pyromorphite to 0.6 cm in length scattered throughout. Very minor damage is present as seen in the photos. Ref: Minerals of Cornwall and Devon (1987) page 119.

Minor quartz in association. The galena crystal shows completely all around 360 degrees as seen in the photos.

A flattish matrix, thus a little difficult to photograph well, the top completely covered by choice pale blue transparent to translucent bladed barite crystals, these measuring to 2.5 cm in size. There are small sparkling colorless transparent crystals of calcite scattered throughout. Very slight chipping is present, not atypical of these. Overall this is in great shape for such an old classic. Measures 9.1 x 7.7 x 3.3 cm in size overall and sits perfectly for display.
